▲ Clockwise from top left: Heavy rains in western Europe, Madagascar’s drought, Maldives’ underwater cabinet meeting, and thunderstorms across the icy Arctic.

More than 100 people have died and hundreds more are missing on July 15th in Germany and Belgium after unseasonal heavy rains. Madagascar’s worst drought in 40 years has left more than a million people facing a year of desperate food shortages. Last week, three successive thunderstorms swept across the icy Arctic from Siberia to north of Alaska, which is an unusual phenomenon in the region. The heat wave that scorched western Canada last week “cooked” crops. Fruits such as cherries were brown in color, their leaves burnt and stems dry.

The unprecedented natural disasters caused by global warming are increasing and more with no end in sight. However, Maldives’ underwater cabinet meeting, which was held in 2009 in a symbolic cry for help over rising sea levels, has not made political leaders worldwide actively take action to save the earth. As former US Vice President Al Gore said in An Inconvenient Truth, a 2006 documentary film, each one of us is a cause of global warming, but each one of us can make choices to change that. The solutions are in our hands as well as in each government’s effort.
