Russia participates in Tokyo Olympics without its national flag
A report written in 2015 by sports lawyer Richard McLaren said that Russian athletes were forced to take drugs during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and manipulated doping tests. Russia’s ban on participation was lifted from 2018 on the condition that Russia would submit data related to doping manipulation at that time. However, as suspicions of manipulation had been raised again, sanctions on players in the 2020 game were finalized.
Russia challenged the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) arguing that there was no manipulation. However, the CAS recognized Russia’s manipulation of doping samples and decided to impose a disciplinary action to limit Russia’s participation in major international sports competitions for two years.
As a result, Russian athletes are not allowed to participate in sport games with their national flag at the Tokyo Olympics, 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Qatar World Cup soccer tournaments as a nation. In addition, the CAS banned Russia from hosting major international competitions or events during the disciplinary period.
Russian athletes will play under the name of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) instead of “Russia” at the Tokyo Olympics. Russian athletes will wear red, blue, white uniforms without national flags at Tokyo Olympics. If they win the gold medal, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s music will replace the Russian national anthem. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the whole of Russia will support athletes and will do their best to ensure the rights and interests of their athletes as much as possible.
On the other hand, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) league was not included in the major international sports competition. Therefore, Russian athletes could participate in the Euro 2020 tournament. The athletes who were not involved in doping can also participate in the competitions as neutral national players.
