▲ “If the director of the Spanish Senate Library explained the map while pointing out Dokdo, it implies that Spain acknowledges Dokdo as Korean territory and makes it hard for the Japanese government to refute against it.”

On June 16th, after attending the G7 summit held in the United Kingdom, President Moon began his schedule of state visits starting from Austria then on to Spain. When visiting the Spanish Senate Library, Moon had a chance to see a valuable ancient map which shows that Dokdo is a part of the Korean territory.

Angel Gonzalez, head of the Spanish Senate Library, showed Moon an ancient Spanish map called “Royaume de Coree,” which is translated to Kingdom of Korea. Royaume de Coree is part of an atlas of the Qing Empire that shows China and its surrounding areas in the 18th century.

When showing the map to Moon, Gonzalez said that it is a map of the Korean peninsula in the 1730’s and he thinks that it would be a record that means a lot to Koreans. After listening, Moon showed his gratitude by saying “It is very valuable evidence that shows that Dokdo is in fact, Korean territory. […] Thanks for showing me such a precious document.”

Hosaka Yuji, professor at Sejong University and director of the Dokdo Research Center at the same university explained the significance and the meaning behind this event. “If the director of the Spanish Senate Library explained the map while pointing out Dokdo, it has a big meaning behind it. It implies that Spain acknowledges Dokdo as Korean territory and makes it hard for the Japanese government to refute against it.” It means that if the third party, in this case Spain, confirms that Dokdo is Korean territory, it is quite impossible for Japan to argue against it. An official at the Blue House confirmed that Gonzalez did point out Dokdo to Moon first, which Korea should take as a sign of friendship.

Professor Hosaka Yuji added that Royaume de Coree is not a new map but familiar to many researchers. It is basic knowledge to people who do research about Dokdo. It is not the first map showing that Dokdo is Korean territory, but the circumstances it was shown in signify the importance of the map even more. The head of the Spanish Senate Library showing the map to President of Korea on a state visit means Spain’s national confirmation that Dokdo belongs to Korea.
