Learn chess, play chess!

Chess, a 1500-year-old board game, is played by millions of people around the world. The beauty of chess is that everyone can map out their strategy in their unique way. How about playing chess as a hobby? Here are my 5 tips for chess beginners.

1. Learn basic rules.

Chess is most entertaining and fair when both players fully understand the rules. Thus, beginners should learn basic rules. In addition, there are three special rules in chess: castling, en passant, and promotion. Make sure you understand them correctly since they are often used in the game. Based on my experience, learning the rules of chess is a lot easier when looking at the chessboard rather than reading it as a text.

2. Learn principles.

When you finish understanding the rules, the principles in chess will make you a better player. Chess principles are general theories built on a database of about 1,000 years. There are typical chess principles such as “control the 4 center squares” and “make the king safe.” With chess principles in your mind, you will be more likely to play in a favorable position.

3. Use the Internet.

The Internet is one of the greatest tools when you’re learning something. You can solve chess puzzles on websites like lichess.org. This website provides numerous chess puzzles neatly sorted by category so that the players can improve on their weak points. Also, on chess.com, you can play chess online and access chess-related news. The Internet can be a good teacher when used correctly. Watch out for misinformation, and don’t try to learn too many things at once. Learn step by step, one at a time.

4. Play & Analyze.

Analyzing your game is the best way to improve your chess skill. Going through your past moves, you will be able to prevent future blunders and build your playstyle. Analyzing is like playing chess with yourself. Look for mistakes in your games and find out how you could have reacted differently.

5. Enjoy!

If you don’t want to get bored easily, you need to enjoy chess. You can watch movies or TV shows about chess. Watch professional chess tournaments hosted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) or other sponsors. Also, there are casual chess streams on platforms like Twitch. Lastly, try playing fast chess. Speeding up your games can add some spice to chess. Fast chess makes your palm sweat through instinctual and aggressive gameplay.
Chess is not a game for talented people, but a sport for everyone to enjoy. Although chess is not very popular in Korea, I hope people reading this take a little more interest in chess.
