Truth about a goldfish’s memory

When we talk about a computer, we often use the word of memory. We also hear about failures of our memory more often.

Memory is the basically the process of getting information around us, and storing and later recalling them, sometimes many years later.

We often say someone has “a memory like an elephant.” If the person is so forgetful, we call him or her “a goldfish.” When I hear these kinds of expressions, I have wondered about the truth, especially about the memory span of a goldfish.

You may have heard the “fact” that a goldfish has a three-second memory. It is a popular belief, not only in Korea but also all over the world. Is a goldfish’s memory really only three seconds? Is it really true?

Scientists have proven that goldfish memory spans are not as short as three seconds. According to them, a goldfish’s memory is at least “three months.” Let me tell you about it now.

Israeli scientists repeatedly have let a goldfish hear a certain sound for a month each time they fed the goldfish. Then they set it free for five months; finally they let it hear the same sound again. The result was that the goldfish immediately came to the sound. This means the goldfish remembered the sound for five months and the food reward that came with it.

More evidence came from Australian scientists. They observed two goldfish fighting; when the fight is over and they meet again the loser goldfish either avoids the winner or shows a good attitude to the winner fish. If the goldfish could not remember, they would fight again and again with the same fish. These studies show that goldfish have more than a three-second memory span.

Anyway, when I read the science articles about goldfish and their memory span, I came to look back on my relationship with one of my old friends. I decided to change my bad habit.
